Automation Potential Score Update

Overview

We are excited to announce an update to the Automation Potential (AP) scoring methodology. This release improves score accuracy by ensuring that AP calculations are based only on automation pathways that are relevant and applicable to each role.

This enhancement provides a more realistic representation of automation opportunities across different job types.

What has changed?

Previously, AP scores were calculated using all automation technologies, including those that were not applicable for certain roles.

With the updated methodology, Non-Applicable Automation Technologies are excluded from the denominator when calculating AP scores.

For example:

  • If Industrial Automation (IA) is not relevant for a role, it will no longer impact the overall AP score.
  • The final score is normalized only across applicable automation pathways.

This ensures roles are evaluated based on automation technologies that can realistically impact them.

Expected impact on AP scores

As a result of this methodology update:

  • Digital and knowledge-based roles may show increased AP scores.
  • Roles with previously non-applicable Industrial automation pathways are expected to have the largest changes.
  • Roles where all automation technologies are applicable will have minimal or no score changes.

Most impacted job families

The largest AP score increases are observed in job families where some automation technologies (especially Industrial Automation) are less applicable. With the updated methodology excluding non-applicable technologies from the calculation, these roles now better reflect their true automation potential.

  • IT
  • Financial Services
  • Supply chain management

Least impacted job families

Job families where all automation pathways are generally applicable experienced smaller score changes, as the methodology update had limited impact on their AP calculation.

Top 3 least impacted job families:

  • Production
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery
  • Maintenance and Repair
