Skills are a very important part of smartPeople. A variety of skills shows your interests, demonstrates your professionalism, and thus, makes your profile attractive. In this way, you can get more opportunities for job or task matching.

In addition, it is also possible to add your proficiency level, define your preferred skill as well as the ones which need your improvement.

There are a few ways to add your skills:

  • manually by searching for the required skills and adding them to your profile
  • automatically by importing your document
  • automatically via text

Let us consider all available options.

Search and add skills

To manually add skills to your profile, follow the steps listed below:

1. On the Profile page, switch to the Skills tab, and then click Start adding.

If you already have skills listed under My skills, to add a new skill, click Add.

2. The Add skills dialog opens with the Search tab selected. First, click the catalog-drop-down-arrow libraries expander arrow to see more options, and then select the library to search for skills. You can also select All libraries.

3. Once you are done, start typing a skill name in the search box, and then select the one you need from the list of suggestions.

4. Once you click a suggestion, it expands to provide you a possibility to define a proficiency level.

5. Click the level you need, and as a result, the skill is added to the Selected skills list. The proficiency level is defined.

6. Once you add a skill, related skills are automatically generated and shown under Related skills. You can select the one(s), if needed. By clicking the related skill of your choice, the skill record is expanded, and you can choose your proficiency level. Once chosen, the skill is added and shown under Selected skills.

7. Now that you have found and added the required skills, click Next at the bottom of the dialog to proceed to the Review skills step.

8. On the next step, you can configure the skills you have added.

To define a skill as your favorite, click a heart icon.

To delete a skill, click a trash bin icon.

Click a skill to expand it and change its proficiency level, if needed. You can choose between the Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert levels.

9. Once you are done configuring your skills, click Add. As a result, the skills are added and saved to your profile.

Browse through skill groups

To find the right skill by browsing through the skill ontology groups, follow the steps listed below:

1. On the Profile page, switch to the Skills tab, and then click Start adding.

If you already have skills listed under My skills, to add a new skill, click Add.

2. In the Add skills dialog that appears, click on the Browse button at the top.

3. To start, click the catalog-drop-down-arrow libraries expander arrow to see more options, and then select the library to browse for skills. You can also select All libraries.

4. Use the skill taxonomy tree to locate the skill you need. Usually, you can go through the following levels: skill family, skill group, skill subgroup, and skill subgroup2. It depends on the library settings.

5. Once you locate the skill you need, click it. The skill record expands to provide you a possibility to define a proficiency level.

6. Click the level you need. As a result, the skill is added to the Selected skills list.

7. Now that you have found and added the required skills, click Next at the bottom of the dialog to proceed to the Review skills step.

8. On the next step, you can configure the skills you have added.

Add skills via document

To automatically add skills by importing your document, follow the steps listed below:

1. On the Profile page, switch to the Skills tab, and then click Start adding.

If you already have skills listed under My skills, to add a new skill, click Add.

2. In the Add skills dialog that appears, switch to the Import document tab.

3. Drag your file to the dialog or click browse to search for the file on your computer.

4. Once a file is uploaded, click Next at the bottom of the dialog to proceed to the Review skills step.

If no skills are found for your profile while processing the file you have uploaded, you get a corresponding notification.

Skills you have already added to your profile are not extracted from your document.

5. On the next step, you can see skills extracted from your document shown in the list. A proficiency level is defined for each skill as well.

If no proficiency level was detected in your document, the Beginner level is set for such skill by default.

You can now configure the skills extracted from your document.

6. Once you are done configuring your skills, click Add. As a result, the skills are saved and added to your profile.

Add skills via text

To automatically add skills by extracting them from a text, follow the steps listed below:

1. On the Profile page, switch to the Skills tab, and then click Start adding.

If you already have skills listed under My skills, to add a new skill, click Add.

2. In the Add skills dialog that appears, switch to the Import text tab.

3. Enter your text from which you want to extract skills, and then click Analyze.

Skills you have already added to your profile are not extracted from your document.

4. Once a process of extracting skills is completed, click Next at the bottom of the dialog to proceed to the Review skills step.

5. On the next step, you can see skills extracted from your text shown in the list. A proficiency level is defined for each skill as well.

If no proficiency level was detected in your text, the Beginner level is set for such skill by default.

You can now configure the skills extracted from your text.

Click a skill to expand it and change its proficiency level, if needed. You can choose between the Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert levels.

6. Once you are done configuring your skills, click Add. As a result, the skills are added and saved to your profile.

Your skills

Now that you have added skills to your profile, you can see them listed under My skills on the Skills tab of your profile.

By default, your skills are presented by the following types:

  • Hard skills
  • Soft skills
  • Languages

If you do not see any of these types listed under My skills, it means that you have not yet added any skill belonging to that type.

Within each group, your skills are sorted by name.

Thus, sorting considers each skill group separately and sorts the records per group. Except for sorting skills by type, you can also sort them by skill family, skill subgroup 2, or even by your favorite skills.

And within each group, you can further sort skills by skill level or skill name.

In addition, you can collapse all skills in the list or expand all records. To this end, click the three dots icon, and then select Expand all or Collapse all depending on your need.

To make a skill your favorite, just click a heart icon within that skill record.

To change a skill proficiency level, point to the skill record, click the three dots button, and then click Change level. As a result, the skill record expands to show its proficiency levels. You can now define the proficiency level you need.

To collapse the skill record and hide proficiency levels, click the three dots button within the skill record once again, and then click Close levels.

To open skill details, point to the skill record which details you want to view, click the three dots button, and then click Open skill details.

To view a skill description, point to a question mark within that skill record.

To delete a skill, click a trash bin icon. Otherwise, you can point to the skill record you want to delete, click the three dots button, and then click Delete.
