Identify skill gaps

In smartPeople, each job has a predefined set of skills needed to be effectively matched in the job for your successful job progression and career. Once you set up your profile by adding your jobs and skills, a summary of each job becomes available. To view it, check out either the Job details page or the My career tab of the Learning & Development area. Here, you can see a list of skills required or recommended for the job. By comparing predefined job requirements and your profile job details, you can reveal and identify your skill gaps. It is shown in the Skill match column.

The skill matching score is calculated based on comparing the required job skills to the skills you have added to your profile. If the required skills are not available, the recommended skills are considered then.

For each skill, you can see a matching status:

  • Missing
  • Fulfilled
  • Exceeds
  • Level gap

By pointing to the level gap status icon, you can see the required proficiency level vs your proficiency level.

My career: Required skills

By default, skills are grouped by a type (hard skills, soft skills, and languages), and skill categories are shown. However, you can select to hide skill categories. To this end, click the three dots button at the top right-hand corner of the list, and then click Hide skill categories.

You can also expand all records in the list or collapse them. To this end, click the three dots button at the top right-hand corner of the list, and then click Expand all or Collapse all.

By default, skills are sorted by skill match. With that, you can also sort them by skill level or skill name.

So, once you have identified skill gaps, you are now to fix them to progress your current or future job and meet all the job requirements.

Depending on the skills and their proficiency level primarily defined for a job as well as based on your current set of skills, you are supposed to either improve a skill by gaining the required level or learn a skill from the scratch and reach its defined proficiency level. Thus, you can make your job progression and fulfill the current requirements.

The required proficiency level is shown next to the skill name. If you have no matches for a job skill, you can see the Missing indicator within the skill record.

For each skill, you can apply one of the following actions: Add to profile or Add as skill to develop. To this end, click the three dots button within that skill record, and then click the command of your choice.

If you select to add a skill to your profile, the skill record expands, and you can define a proficiency level you have reached. Once you are done, you are notified, that the skill has been added to your profile.

If you select to add a skill to the list of skills you need to develop, it moves to your list of skills to develop. You can also add a skill to the list of skills to develop by clicking a plus sign within that skill record in the Develop skill column on the My career tab. As a result, a plus sign is changed to a check mark in the Develop skill column on the My career tab, and the skill also appears on the Skills to develop tab. For more details, see Skills to develop.

With that, you can update your profile accordingly on the Skills tab of the Profile page.

There may be a situation, when you already have a skill in your profile matching the required one, but the level is not sufficient. Then you get that skill with an indicator showing you a number of levels to be gained to meet the skill requirements. Take your time for learning until you gain the required proficiency level. You can expand that skill record to define the new level whenever you need.

Every time you make a progress, the Level gap indicator changes accordingly showing you a number of levels to be gained to reach the required level of the skill. Do it until you gain the proficiency level required for that skill.

Once you reach the required level, the indicator is changed to Fulfilled. If you develop your proficiency level even higher than the target level, then you can see the indicator displaying Exceeds.

Add skill to profile
